Next Generation Procedural Skills Training

Simulation-based skills training for surgical practitioners to independently learn and improve procedural skills — wherever they are and without a physically present instructor.

The Surgical Education Learners Forum (SELF) is a community of practice aimed at addressing the global burden of disease by developing innovative, cost-effective, and scalable solutions for procedural skills training. The SELF framework empowers surgical practitioners to independently learn the necessary context for a procedure, develop their physical and decision-making skills, and evaluate their own progress towards procedural competency.

Change the Playbook for Procedural Skills Training

The SELF community of practice is a global network of medical practitioners, researchers, learners, educators, and technologists who are committed to learning from one another. By leveraging innovative and cost-effective learning methods, the community of practice is working to bring on-demand procedural skills training directly to surgical practitioners.

Learners

SELF training modules empower clinicians to learn and improve procedural skills needed in their local community and workplaces.

SELF modules are designed for interprofessional surgical team members, including nurses, physicians, critical care practitioners, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and medical officers.

See how SELF empowers learners to enhance their skills and put them into practice.

Developers

Developers create and expand access to procedural skill training that is urgently needed by wide variety of surgical specialties.

A developer can be an individual or an organization who conceptualizes, prototypes, tests, and improves procedural skills training modules.

See how developers around the world are carving out new paths to transforming the way skills training is done.

Community

The SELF community of practice is a global network of medical practitioners, researchers, educators, technologists, and learners who are committed to expanding access to simulation-based training to teach psychomotor skills needed at the frontlines of health care.

See how SELF community of practice members are supporting each other to build tools and methods, as well as leading research on the SELF framework.

Access Simulation-based Training Modules

SELF training modules are available online at no cost and include simple instructions for building a physical simulator using locally-available materials.

Central to every SELF training module is the ability for learners to independently measure their own competency through an integrated, self-administered skills assessment.

Become a Training Module Developer

Expand the range of SELF training modules by becoming a module developer. Each training module consists of three components: knowledge acquisition, simulation-based training, and self-administered skills assessment.

Are you up for a challenge to develop a training module alongside a community of like-minded leaders?

Revolutionizing Skills Training for Practitioners Looking to Upskill

“What’s possibly unique about what we’re doing is bringing it into an open source platform where we can build a seed crystal of important modules that others can then add their material onto. We want to bring it out of the lab and into common use.”
