Agenda

  • Join us for an information reception to mark the start of the SELF Symposium. Light fare will be provided on the outdoor patio of The Courtyard Restaurant.

Wednesday, August 28

Thursday, August 29

  • Catherine Mohr will summarize the agenda, methods, and expectations for the event.

    Location: Crescent Room

  • We will review what the SELF community has made progress on since the previous SELF Symposium in August 2023, and we will discuss where SELF is headed over time and the work that needs to happen next.

  • We will review the conceptual frameworks and digital tools that have been created to enable the development of SELF training modules.

This includes key conceptual elements such as self-administered skills assessment and peer review assessment methods, as well as tools such as the ENTRUST platform and a tissues database for simulator development.

Participants can expect to reflect on, share, and prioritize feedback relating to these tools.

  • We will continue to examine developer tools and walk through the developer's journey when building SELF training modules.

Participants can expect to reflect on, share, and prioritize feedback on these tools through highly collaborative brainstorming techniques.

  • We will revisit the standards of evidence and quality that are prerequisites for scaling the SELF community’s efforts. We will discuss the challenges of and solutions for generating evidence relating to effectiveness and safety.

We will review the evidence protocol checklists for developers and researchers, while also establishing design principles for a SELF study registry.

  • We will review the day's results and introduce the action-oriented working groups on Friday.

Participants can expect to select from a list of working group topics that align with their interests and areas of specialty.

  • In the evening, each participant is invited to attend a facilitated dinner on a specific topic of interest for the SELF community.

Dinners will take place at Jade Pavilion Restaurant or Bol Restaurant. Ground transportation will be provided.

Friday, August 30

  • Complementary breakfast buffet is served at the Courtyard Restaurant each morning for guests.

  • Catherine Mohr will welcome participants to the second day, and facilitate light reflections on the Thursday sessions and dinners.

  • We will break into working groups formed around specific topics, such as developing various standards for training modules. These groups provide semi-structured space to discuss more specialized actions that we want to make progress on together.

Participants should expect to collaborate to build, modify, or plan actions to advance SELF after the Symposium.

Working group topics include learner definition, the SELF registry, the recommendation engine, the evidence generation package for modules, the tissues database, self-administered assessment guidelines, the community of practice, the clinical evaluation program, and a UGHE module development course.

  • We will once more break into working groups to discuss specialized topics and how we might partner together to prepare for scale. Some groups may center on concrete ideas for collaboration among the current members of the SELF community, while others may consider how to bring SELF to existing groups doing aligned work.

Participants should expect to collaborate to build, modify, or plan actions to advance SELF after the Symposium.

Working group topics include: women's health, pediatric surgery, anesthesia and critical care, trauma, biomedical training, and minimally invasive surgery.

  • We will consider who could join the SELF community or support SELF as partners to realize SELF’s potential. During this session, we will discuss partnership opportunities, responsibilities, and strategies for further developing SELF with others.

  • We will plan to commit to action on a set of recommendations and coordinated efforts to guide the SELF community’s work for the next year and beyond.

  • In the evening, each participant is invited to attend a casual closing party to recognize one another’s efforts and make the most of our time in person among SELF’s global community of practice.

The party begins at 18:30, however, participants are invited to arrive at their discretion.

Location: Ferria KL— directly across the street from the Pavilion Hotel.
