Task Deconstruction Workshop
Wednesday, 4 December | Harare, Zimbabwe
This full-day workshop aimed to accelerate the development of perioperative skills training modules for nurses and midwives in resource-constrained settings.
Through facilitated activities, participants worked to breakdown a complex procedure into smaller, management tasks.
These tasks became the basis for developing training modules that enable clinicians to independently learn and practice perioperative skills needed to improve patient care.
This workshop took place on the sidelines of COSECSA at the University of Zimbabwe International Centre for Surgical Simulation.
Intuitive Foundation invited participants to a reception on Tuesday, December 3 at Cresta Oasis Hotel. The reception was optional.

What is task deconstruction?
In the context of procedural medicine and training, task deconstruction is a process of breaking down a complex procedure into smaller, manageable components or steps. Each step is analyzed in detail, allowing learners to focus on individual elements of the task before putting everything together into a complete procedure.
The purpose of task deconstruction in procedural skills training is to simplify the learning process and identify key skills required at each step of a procedure.
What should you prepare for the workshop?
Before traveling to Harare, participants will record a video of a perioperative procedure in their workplace.
This video will be used during the workshop to breakdown the procedure into smaller, manageable steps.
Video recording guidelines:
Select a perioperative procedure that is common in your workplace
Get patient permission to record the procedure
Have another person film the procedure
If possible, try to record the entire procedure
