Get Involved and Take Action
The SELF Community of Practice plays a vital role in advancing and transforming procedural skills training through innovative simulation-based learning. As educators, clinicians, and institutions, we have a unique opportunity to contribute by developing new training modules, refining assessment tools, and sharing best practices.
Whether through designing training modules, joining peer-review initiatives, or participating in working groups, every effort moves us closer to a shared goal: making high-quality procedural training universally accessible and improving patient care worldwide.

Ways You Can Transform Procedural Skills Training
-
Create the Playbook
Provide feedback on the Developer Playbook: instructions for creating procedural skills training modules.
-
Developer Resources
Help build resources and tools for developing SELF training modules.
-
Training Modules in Development
Collaborate with those developing new SELF training modules.
Additional Details
The SELF Symposium, held during the 2024 International Surgical Week in Kuala Lumpur, gathered leaders focused on innovative, cost-effective, and scalable training solutions.
Insights from the event contributed to the development of the SELF Developer Playbook, a comprehensive guide for designing and implementing simulation-based procedural training modules.
Several development tools and projects are also underway to support the growth of SELF training modules, including a Peer Review App for video-based skill assessments, a Recommendation Engine to help learners find relevant training content, and a Tissues and Simulator Database to assist in material selection for cost-effective simulators.
Other initiatives include a Registry for tracking learning outcomes, an UGHE course designed to teach module development, and a Tiger Team of clinical and educational experts advising on training framework implementation.
Additionally, efforts to build new training modules are being supported by organizations such as ECSACONM, WACS, PTC, and recipients of the Intuitive Foundation’s Clinical Skills Training Grant. These efforts align with the broader goal of ensuring that learners can independently use SELF modules to gain competence and confidence in new procedural skills.
